![]() So why in Kheaven’s name is the cover art a hokey, unoriginal cartoon parody of the National Lampoon’s Vacation movie poster, with k-os hoisting a hockey stick while a beaver shoots laser beams from its eyes? Easier to fly without gravity than to woo listeners with a meaningless, inappropriate atrocity like that. Solidly packed from stem to stern, it may be his most consistent and fully integrated work to date. And he unspools some of his most thoughtful, topical and intelligent lyrics to date with his usual skillful flow and personable presentation. He artfully decorates them all with sharp sampling and ear-catching production. To wit: He seamlessly and creatively mixes genres and sonics - rap, rock, reggae and more are all in the mix here once again. Eclectic Toronto hip-hopper Kheaven Brereton does indeed spread his wings and soar with his superb sixth studio release. K-os Can’t Fly Without Gravity This week in Good Albums with Bad Covers: k-os’s Can’t Fly Without Gravity. It shouldn’t hang together, but it does, making Poison Season yet another triumph for the idiosyncratic Bejar - and an antidote for anyone suffering from an overdose of indie-pop cliches. ![]() ![]() But it all comes shrouded with Bejar’s usual enigmatic touches: Cryptically poetic lyrics full of wry one liners - all delivered in his wispy Dylanesque croak-croon - set against multi-part odes to Times Square and elegantly tense orchestrations that elevate his fastidious indie-pop into a work of otherworldly sophistication and grace. Over the course of its 52 confoundingly wonderful minutes, you’ll hear traces of Born to Run-era Springsteen (complete with boisterous saxes), Bowie circa Young Americans, Street Hassle-period Lou Reed, ’80s Alan Parsons Project, jazzy-pop a la Steely Dan and plenty more. Take the Vancouver singer-songwriter and sometime New Pornographer’s 10th Destroyer album Poison Season. Which is kinda strange when you consider that he writes songs that sound like a lot of other people.
